What Actually Makes You Stronger

Getting stronger isn't just "lift heavy things." Strength is built through two core training principles and four distinct adaptive systems in the body — and understanding them changes how you should structure your training.
Specificity Comes First
The most important principle in strength training is specificity: your training has to stimulate the exact systems that produce the performance you want. Specificity exists on a spectrum. Practicing the competition lift itself is the narrowest and most specific form of training. Building general size and strength in the muscles used for that lift is broader but still useful. Advanced flexibility work is only tangentially related. Something like heavy endurance training can actually work against strength goals entirely. The takeaway: not all "hard training" moves you toward your goal — it has to target the right systems.
Overload Comes Second
Once training is specific, it also has to be overloading — meaning it disrupts the body enough to force adaptation, and it gets harder over time on average. Overload doesn't require every single session to beat the last one; fatigue and variation make strict linear progression impractical. But across weeks and months, both the weight on the bar and total training volume need to trend upward, or strength gains stall. As the book puts it, no amount of squatting 135 lbs will get you to a 600 lb squat — the stimulus has to keep climbing.

Four Systems, Four Different Timelines
Every strength session actually trains four separate systems at once, and they adapt and recover at very different speeds:
Technique adapts fastest and most dramatically from lighter, skill-focused practice — this is why light technical work can be trained frequently.
Muscle size (hypertrophy) responds best to higher-volume training in moderate intensity ranges, and typically needs at least weekly stimulation per muscle group for continued growth.
Nervous system force output — your body's ability to generate maximal force through a given amount of muscle — adapts more slowly, often taking about a week to peak, and even longer (up to two weeks) in advanced lifters. This is a big part of why experienced lifters can out-lift less experienced people of the same muscle size.
Connective tissue (tendons, ligaments, bone) adapts slowest of all, given how poorly vascularized these tissues are. Recovery here can take weeks to months, which is why constant maximal-intensity training without lighter periods risks long-term breakdown rather than progress.
Because these systems recover on different timelines, a single training approach applied constantly usually shortchanges at least one of them. Programs that mix heavier, lower-volume strength work with lighter, higher-volume hypertrophy work — and account for technique and connective tissue health along the way — tend to develop all four systems rather than just one.
The Bottom Line
Strength is not generated by a single method. It results from a specific stimulus, progressively intensified, and spread across systems that adapt at varying rates. Train with purpose, gradually increase the difficulty, and understand that your nervous system and connective tissues require different recovery periods compared to your muscles.
